PHILADELPHIA — Two Center City Philadelphia Wawa stores are closing.

The popular convenience chain is planning to shutter doors on stores at 12th and Market streets and 19th and Market streets.

Wawa called the decision difficult.

"Despite reducing hours and investing in additional operational measures, continued safety and security challenges and business factors have made it increasingly difficult to remain open in these two locations," Wawa said.

Employees at the two locations will be offered continued employment at Wawa, according to a statement from the company.

The two store will close sometime in the next few weeks, Wawa said.

Wawa said the closures do not necessarily impact or limit potential for future stores in Philadelphia.

"We are very sorry we can’t be there for our friends and neighbors at these two locations, but we continue to serve the community from our other nearby stores and our commitment to the greater region remains strong," Wawa said. "Philadelphia is our hometown and that’s something that will never change."

Wawa said it hopes to repurpose the locations to "further benefit Philadelphia."

"To that end, we have initiated a review of options and are exploring possibilities with our partners, the community and local officials," Wawa said. "Our commitment and ongoing investments in Philadelphia continue to grow and expand – from our title sponsorship of Wawa Welcome America to our long-standing support of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Philly Soccer 2026 that will help raise Philadelphia’s profile as a world class city."
