Don’t Iron while the Strike is Hot (Sign at 1970 Strike)

Women's bodies are not the place for political pandering

Across the nation, we have been subjected to a barrage of bad legislation. Conservative legislators, in an effort to force their views into law, have been pushing bills to defund Planned Parenthood, restrict access to reproductive health services and violate our constitutionally protected civil rights.

It is time to take a stand and feminists nationwide are coming together to end this war on women. We will stand together on the anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, and pay homage to those who came before us, especially to the original Women’s Strike for Equality that took place on August 26, 1970.

On this day, we will come together in cities across the nation, to make our voices heard. We will host teach-ins and speakers, and we will discuss how we must work together to ensure our rights are protected. Five events are planned regionally: New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

Women’s bodies are not the place for political pandering. We will not allow the GOP to force their draconian legislation into our bodies with vaginal probes. We will not allow conservative dogma to close our clinics and restrict our access to reproductive health care.

This battle for our rights extends to our right to fair wages, better education, childcare, environmental protections and equality for all. As big a concern as the bad legislation is the legislation that is missing.

On this day we will launch our efforts to empower feminists, to lead our national dialogue on our rights and our future. We will introduce to our nation a new paradigm, one where “We the People” draft legislation and bring it to our legislators. We will help to train citizens to form citizen lobby groups. We will support each other as we campaign and elect those who stand with and for women, and who will protect our rights.
