Chester County Phone Scam Threatens Victims With Arrest To Lure Cash

"There is an organized effort" to continue to scam local residents into paying money to scammers pretending to be law enforcement.

A phone scam that has struck both Montgomery and Chester Counties demands that residents pay cash to prevent a warrant for their arrest from being served.

Both the Chester County Sheriff’s Office and the Upper Merion Police Department have warned of this scam.

Scammers demand the victims go to a local pharmacy to buy money cards, and then call 610-314-5848 to provide the number of the money card.

Calls to that number went unanswered Wednesday, and went straight to voicemail. The voicemail is a male with a southern accent claiming to be with the Chester County Sheriff’s Department. That number is false, authorities said.

“There is an organized effort on the part of individuals attempting to scam residents of Chester County and surrounding counties,” Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh said in a press release. “These calls are bogus and do not originate here in the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.”’
