Giant Spends $454K For Liquor License In Phoenixville

Giant Food Stores is dropping $454K to buy a liquor license in Phoenixville.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA -- Giant Food Stores is dropping $454K to buy a liquor license in Phoenixville.

The purchase came as part of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board's statewide auction of expired restaurant licenses. A total of 50 expired licenses from 48 counties around the state were up for auction, whose top bidders were confirmed on Tuesday.

The state is required to sell expired licenses as part of Act 39, passed in 2016.

Phoenixville's Giant, located on 700 Nutt Road, could soon begin selling alcohol. This would bring them into competition with nearby Wegmans, which sells alcohol at its Providence Town Center location just a few miles away.

In January, a beer garden and eatery opened at the Royersford Giant, located on 1824 Ridge Pike. Including Royersford, a total of 33 Giants now sell beer across Pennsylvania.

The only other purchase made in the Philadelphia area was also made by Giant. The chain dropped $463,802 for a license in Abington Township. Giant ultimately purchased several of the 50 licenses up for auction. Only Sheetz paid more for licenses.
