Golf: Farrell Leads the Way With 48 as Phantoms Battle Vikings

PAC-10 golf report: Phoenixville played Perk Valley at Limerick Golf Club.

LIMERICK-If there is one word that describes Perkiomen Valley girls golf coach Leslie Lewis’ enthuiasm as she approaches the season and her young Vikings squad it would be infectious.

It is that infectious spirit and energy that has built a team that has more than 20 players and is now a Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC-10) contender every year and a squad that has set a team goal of a district appearance as a measuring stick of this season’s success.

The Phantoms are looking to follow that lead as they take to the links this season, striving for a district berth.

On Wednesday, Phoenixville visited the Vikings at Limerick Golf Club, and the team was handed a 247-265 defeat largely due to an overachieving effort in a round of 54 by junior Briana Krewson, in which she recorded three pars and drained a long one-putt on the par-five seventh hole.

The top Perk Valley duo of Jenny Minnick and Sarah Hart both recorded two pars each as their rounds of 45 and 46 respectively paced the Viking to their second straight league victory. Also scoring for Perkiomen Valley was Berlynn Hall (50) and Alyvia Dugan (52).

“We are heading in the right direction,” said Phoenixville coach Rob Huston. “Each week we are seeing improvement.”

Countless hours on the driving range and practice green at Pickering Valley Gold Club for Olivia Farrell, who shot 48, Liz Sitkowski (53) and their teammates have led to the Phantoms putting themselves in position to be one of the teams in the hunt for the league title as well as compete for a district qualifying spot.

“We had two girls qualify for districts with scores of 87 last season,” added Huston. “Finishing when we have a chance and eliminating the small mistakes is what will get us to that point this season.”

Eva Talbert (57), Ashley Sierzega (54), Alex Philo (57) and Katherine Spraegle (59) battled with Sierzega recording a par-three to help pace her squad.

“I am very lucky to have such a group of great kids,” Lewis said. “My girls are talking about Ivy League schools. Not only do they excel on the links, they are very bright. Having girls like this on my team makes my job not only very easy, but a lot of fun. I am looking forward to helping my girls achieve the goals they have set for themselves individually and as a team.”

The next match for Phoenixville is on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Spring Hollow Golf Club vs. Great Valley at 3 p.m.
