Imparting Knowledge VS Imposing Ideals; where did we lose our way?

To those who have been reading this blog so far I want to express my gratitude. If what I have written has motivated you to respond, I appreciate the engagement. If you have walked into Borough Hall, and expressed yourself about these topics, I salute you.

In an attempt to entice those who would typically find politics boring, or a waste of energy, or simply a process that they are not responsible to influence I ask this: What about imparting knowledge is different from imposing ideals?

We, as a union of sovereign states, consisting of individual citizens, entitled to certain inalienable rights seem to be lost. What happened that lured us so far off of the path? When did it become acceptable for the majority to dictate what should be adopted as universal belief? When did the beliefs of the many overpower the rights of the individual? So often in recent times one can watch situations unravel in which the loudest voice, the more visible cause, those who dominate the propaganda driven culture of media are being appeased by the majority simply because they are louder, more visible, and more publicized.

We all can learn from each other. Once an inherent respect for the opinions of the opposite side is acknowledged, common ground can be sought. We all have the ability to argue our case. If what we fight for should be protected under the umbrella of inalienable rights or liberty; if the argument has substance; if there is truth in the ideal, any reasonable human being will see that truth. We are not empowered to deny personal liberty to anyone; we are obligated to protect each other & the right to that liberty, even if we are not on the same side… because really, even if we disagree, we all claim the right to do so, so in reality we are on the same side.

I ask for thoughts on this: Is it a violation of liberty to be forced to acknowledge anything that anyone calls “their right” as acceptable? Should our citizens be made to incorporate the beliefs of others, no matter how contradictory said beliefs are in comparison to what that citizen holds in regard? Where do we draw the line between the ideals of those currently in the spotlight, and the rights of the individuals who hold certain fundamentals to be sacred?  Is our Republic still based on the liberty of the individual or has it become a mob rule state? What do you think?
