Model UN Hosting Chicken and Ribs Barbecue Fundraiser
This new group at Phoenixville Area High School hopes to raise money for an upcoming trip to Washington, DC.
With the spring-like weather of this winter, it’s easy to conjure up thoughts of warm weather treats like barbecued chicken and fall-off-the-bone ribs.
There’s no need to wait for those treats thanks to a new group at Phoenixville Area High School. The Model United Nations Club, which got rolling in the district in August, is planning a barbecue fundraiser this Saturday.
The club hopes to raise $10,000 to support a March trip to the annual Model United Nations Conference in Washington, DC. So far, according to Treasurer Kyle Kolbilka, the club has raised $4,000, but they’re hoping the barbecue gives them a boost that will help trim individual students’ expenses for the journey.

Model UN members from Phoenixville are working with Nelson’s BBQ to bring a portable barbecue pit to the parking lot of the high school on Saturday. Choices include a half rack of ribs or a half chicken meal for $14 and $9, respectively.
Kolbilka said the club has been preparing for the conference in Washington since its inception and said the club members will also get a chance to explore the city during the trip on March 22 to 25. The group from Phoenixville will be assigned a certain country at the conference.

“You’ve got to work with the other countries to get stuff done,” Kolbilka said.
Members get up early to meet before the bell rings on Monday mornings, and they hope the new club can enjoy the experience in Washington for the first time.
Pre-orders and payments should be in by Thursday, Kolbilka said, and you can find the pre-order form attached to this article. Some meals may also be available on-site Saturday, but pre-orders are preferred. Orders and payments may be dropped off at the main office of the high school at 1200 S. Gay St.
In addition, tables are available for anyone who would like to support the club. Each table at the event costs $40. General donations are also accepted, and the club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
In all, Kolbilka said he thinks the barbecue will be great opportunity to learn more about the Model UN at Phoenixville Area High School while enjoying some good food.
“I think this would be a good opportunity for the community to get involved with the high school and have a good time doing it,” Kolbilka said.
