New Music - Bonnie Raitt - Just Like That...

Bonnie Raitt has always been a staple of my musical journey.

From her early days of performing at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr where she honed her craft; to becoming a household name with her “overnight success” (some 25 years in the making!) when her 1989 Nick of Time scored multiple Grammy awards; to her collaborations with folks like Jackson Browne, John Prine, and Keb’ Mo’ along the way, she has been a consistent voice and a solid citizen of the world throughout her career. So it was thrilling to hear about this new set of music – six years since her last release – and see that her skills and style have only improved with the passage of time…

From the notes of the first track, “Made Up Mind,” you know you’re in for a real treat as Bonnie’s band of merry musicians (George Marinelli, ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, Ricky Fataar, Glenn Patscha, and Kenny Greenberg) deliver a sound that is familiar and fresh all at the same time.

Other standout tracks on the record include the vintage jazz-funk vibes of “Waiting for You to Blow,” “Living for the Ones” with it’s echoes of classic rockers like Mick & Keith, the inspiring “Down the Hall,” and the triumph out of tragedy title track “Just Like That…” That song’s punctuation is purposely left open… Almost to encourage the listener to continue forward on the path it begins to lay out… It’s a subtle move, but quite effective.

On Just Like That… Raitt’s singing is more nuanced and soulful than ever – and her musicianship achieves a new level of sophistication. The music greets your like a warm embrace from an old friend, and then seeps into your consciousness to replay in your mind and stay in your bones.

This latest record is one of the most heartfelt and one of the most satisfying works in her storied recording career – Highly recommended!
