New music for the holiday season (Pt 1) - A Ben Rector Christmas

It’s the holidays & that means it’s time for my “12 Faves of Christmas”… It’s my annual listener’s guide to new music that is being offered for the season to let you know about the ones that some extra attention. I’ll present them here every couple of days or so & in no particular order…

We’ll start off with a release from Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ben Rector who has an updated version of his record, A Ben Rector Christmas out this year. I wanted to post this one as close to Thanksgiving as possible because it leads off with the great track “The Thanksgiving Song.” SO good & a perfect way to get our holiday music reviews started. The track is heartfelt and reminisces about family gatherings in days gone by – While cleverly referencing our recent, challenging twenty-past months… Rather Bruce Hornsby-esque in it’s arrangement, it may very well become the unofficial anthem of a holiday that doesn’t have a lot of music associated with it (but it certainly should)…

Staying faithful to a handful of holiday favorites, the rest of this record includes “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”—originally written in 1963 by George Wyle and Edward Pola, and made popular by Andy Williams—“Frosty The Snowman” (Jack Rollins, Steve Nelson), and Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” and rounds out with “Christmastime is Here,” written by Lee Mendelson, Vince Guaraldi, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Hugh Martin, Ralph Blane, and the Mel Torme and Robert Wells classic “The Christmas Song.” The updated version also tosses in another classic, “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” to round out this perfect holiday treat.

It's a wonderful 8-song collection designed to get your holidays off to a fantastic start!
