New music - Stew Cutler - The Blues from Another Angle
Great new collection of music from an 'under-the-radar' performer...
Folks who know me know I dig the blues – A LOT! So it’s no surprise that I’ve warmed up to this latest release from the well-seasoned guitarist and composer Stew Cutler called The Blues from Another Angle which deftly incorporates his blues along with jazz, gospel, and R&B in his repertoire.
The record kicks off with Cutler on lead vocals taking us through a fiery cover of Tyrone Davis’ classic mega-hit “Can I Change My Mind.” That’s followed down the line by the deliciously rhythmic “Get It While You Can” which features Mary Jean Cutler on lead vocals; a soulful instrumental, “The Passing of RR Moore,” that pays tribute to the late comedian-actor-singer Rudy Ray Moore; and the jazzy album-closer “Shine or Rain.” Through it all, Cutler continues his main objective which is to honor the blues.
Produced by Stewart Lerman the project boasts an impressive roster of top-notch musicians assisting in the proceedings including drummer Bill McClellan, keyboardist Tom Wilson, bassist Booker King, saxophonist Steve Elson, and vocalists Bobby Harden and Mary Jean Cutler, who does double-duty here being Stew’s wife as well. Also showcasing their prowess on the album are guest artists Mike Stern blazing through a guitar solo on “Blews” and James Montgomery making the harmonic sing on “Say What You Mean.”

When not shredding in the recording studio, Cutler also works a good deal with movies and television. His work can be found on the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese’s 2019 film, The Irishman, performing “How High the Moon.” He’s also closely associated with the Emmy Award-winning Amazon TV series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Cutler was on the Maisel soundtrack for the second and third season, plus he can be seen performing as part of a house band in a club scene during in an upcoming episode in this current season.
The guy gets around - And Cutler continues to bring the blues to the world one guitar lick at a time – All we have to do is soak it all in… With one great performance after another!
