New Trees Add Beauty and Shade to Borough Public Spaces

In conjunction with Earth Day, Arbor Day was celebrated in Phoenixville on April 23rd, 2016. The event began with a reading of the Arbor Day Proclamation by Borough Council member, James Kovaleski, and presentation of the Tree City USA flag to the Borough Tree Advisory Commission (TAC) by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Arbor Day Foundation also recognized Phoenixville with a Growth Award and for maintaining Tree City USA status for 8 years in a row.

Twenty new trees were added to Phoenixville’s urban forest on April 23rd, 2016. Approximately 40 volunteers from the community and two crews from the Borough Streets Department enjoyed working together outside on the wet spring morning. Approximately eight students from the Phoenixville Area High School’s Green Club were part of the volunteer group.

The trees were planted in Reeves Park and along streets in the Borough. Thanks to all for participating! The trees were purchased at a reduced price due to a subsidization program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in support of the Plant One Million campaign.

Additionally, Phoenixville residents who think managing and maintaining the urban forest in the Borough is important should contact their council person and let them know they would like to have additional public trees planted in their wards.
