October is the height of the haunted house season, in Phoenixville, in Chester County, and in many parts of the United States.

For a few weeks, elaborate decorations adorn lawns across the borough, and more often than not, the spookiest and most creative exhibits take on a cemetery theme.

But Phoenixville, the historic borough that it is, has its fair share of real cemeteries, with real history.

Even in the midst of dense suburban development, several graveyards in the area are tucked into groves of trees, or nestled into hard to find places, that they have a sense of the wild - or the serene - about them.

St. Mary’s Cemetery with Church in background. St. Mary’s Church is one of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in the area, and it has significant historical import. Several veterans of the bloodiest day in United States history - the Battle of Antietam - that were residents of the neighborhood and who died that day, are buried here.
