PECO Phone Scam Strikes Phoenixville

Don't fall for this scam spreading across the borough, police warn.

A PECO scam is spreading across Phoenixville, in which a hanging flyer is left on residential doors luring credit card information from victims, the Phoenixville Police Department announced Friday.

The flyer has a number which victims are encouraged to call - 855-347-8960 - to redeem a gift card from PECO, police said.

Upon calling the number, victims are directed to a call center operator, who explains in detail that the card is in fact not restricted to only PECO, and can be used for “anything you like,” and lists off a number of possible things you can buy with the gift card.

“You can use it for handbags, clothing, merchandise, and you can use it from the day you receive the card,” the call center operator told Patch, when a reporter dialed the number.

Victims are then told that they need to provide a credit card number for a shipping charge of $6.95.

Police say that it is a scam and not to call the number. PECO officials said they notified the Phoenixville Police Department of the issue and that they had no connection with phone number or “promotion.”
