Petition To Bring Back Phoenixville Mural Gains Momentum

The future of the Phoenixville Mural project and Renaissance Park both remain threatened.

Phoenixville, PA -- A petition has been launched to bring the Phoenixville mural on Main and Bridge streets back, and to help preserve Renaissance Park.

Phoenixville, PA -- The public petition is asking the Phoenixville Area Economic Development Corporation (PAEDCO), which owns the wall where the mural previously was, to allow a mural that has been designed to be installed.

The wall is adjacent to the Steel City coffee shop at a very visible juncture downtown. The wall, however, is not owned by Steel City.

In late 2015, pieces of the old mural began to crumble, and the entire work of art had to be dissembled.

At the foot of the wall is a small community park, Renaissance Park, which includes inscribed bricks from those who donated to help create the park.

The petition and its supporters point to the park and the wall as key aspects of the borough's revival.

PAEDCO, however, could try to sell the property, according to the petition,  which could in turn lead to development and the destruction of the park and the wall where the mural stood.

A conception of what the new mural would look like is pictured above.

According to the Times Herald, close to 3,000 people had signed the petition thanks to signature drives at recent public festivals around the borough.

Fundraisers have been held to raise money to save the mural.

The petition was launched by council member Edwin Soto. The project has long been supported by community activist Barbara Cohen.
