Phantoms Relay Team Grabs Medals at Viking Invitational

The team qualified for districts at this weekend's meet.

PERKIOMEN-At the Viking Invitational, Phoenixville’s 4 x 800-meter relay team of Rachel Carr, Aubrey Halloran, Amy Kowalick and Jackie Tudor went out and ran a time of 10:09.98, which qualified them for districts and a fifth-place medal, jarring a fond memory that Halloran had as a middle school competitor.

Halloran has come along way from that 4 x 100 relay team that electrified the crowd at Franklin Field in 2007.

“I remember when I was in sixth grade and we ran at the Penn Relays,” said Halloran. “It would be so great to get to run there this year. The crowd is crazy. You get chills when you take the track. We have to keep working and get our times even better, but I know we can.”

On Saturday more than 50 teams, boys and girls, converged on Thomas Keenan Stadium at Perkiomen Valley High School, in the fourth year of an event that brings the very best that the tri-state area has to offer, with teams traveling from as far away as the Poconos and Delaware.

“It’s going to be little weird knowing that we can qualify for districts,” said junior lead off Rachel Carr. “We are just starting to come together as a group, so I am so excited that we were able to medal here. I got to run in the Penn Relays last year and it would be awesome to go back there with this team.”

The girls set the pace early and led for the first portion of the race thanks to Carr’s outstanding first leg. There was no weak link as the Phantoms quartet never fell out of the top five en route to a medal.

Carr also claimed a fourth-place medal in the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.31

“These girls have worked so hard,” said head coach Jay Carlin. “Two of them are just back from injuries and the other is a freshmen. They will probably be able to shave 10 to 15 seconds off their time as districts and states get closer.”

The boys 4 x 800-meter relay of Chris Mullin, Ryan Marks, Matt Chiappetta and senior Tommy Timmins cruised to bronze medal with a time of 8:14.46, which finished the Phantoms solidly in third just two seconds behind the winning team.

Phoenixville junior Lisa Payton represented the Purple and black well with a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.41, while senior Zaf McCrea finished twelfth in the boys 400-meter dash running 52.95.

Hurdlers sophomore Tyler Timmins and senior Dan Kain finished 18th and 19th respectively in the boys 300-meter hurdles.
