With their ejected coach Jack Sturgeon waiting in the parking lot, the Phoenixville Phantoms scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to beat Upper Moreland 8-7 for the PIAA AAA District 1 title.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, after Sturgeon was thrown out for arguing a balk call that gave Upper Moreland what would prove to be their final run, the Phantoms loaded the bases with three walks to start the seventh inning before getting a two-run double by Shane Allen to cut the deficit to 7-5, a two-out double to center by Cole Luzins to tie it at 7, then a single to left field by sophomore pinch hitter Tom Kawchak for the winning run.
"It was kind of a tense situation," he told the Inquirer. "I just tried to relax and put the ball in play."
It was the first District title since 2004 for the Phantoms (16-8) and first since they moved up from AA to AAA.
On Monday, Phoenixville will face District 11 champ Blue Mountain at a time and a location yet to be determined.
