Beginning in September, the aim of the program will be to document the short-term effects of a whole foods, plant-based diet on routinely measured parameters in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

“Nutrition plays an integral part of our health,” Negron said in statement. “As a country, we have amassed an unnerving amount of chronic illness in the last 50 years. It would be far more cost effective to address many of these illnesses with lifestyle changes than the current pharmacological model.”

Roughly 80 percent of chronic illnesses, including Type 2 Diabetes are linked to diet and lifestyle. For Type 2 Diabetes in particular, risk factors include being overweight and a diet of animal-based and processed foods, The Clinic said.

Around 100 million people in the U.S. are obese, and 35 million have Type 2 Diabetes, according to statistics cited by The Clinic.
