Phoenixville Police Now Able To Scan Lost Pets, Deliver Them Straight Home

The new microchip program in Phoenixville aims to relieve the burden of local animal shelters.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA -- The Phoenixville Police Department is partnering with a local animal shelter to help bring lost pets home.

The borough police will not have a universal microchip scanner which will allow them to scan dogs and cats and other animals when they are found. If the animal can be identified, they can be immediately brought home to their family. This cuts out the middle step of utilizing kennels and shelters which are often overbooked and cannot handle more animals.

According to a press release describing the new initiative, council member Jonathan Ewald was crucial in building a partnership with Affinity Veterinary Center in Malvern to create the program.

Christine Meredith, a veterinarian with Affinity Care, donated the scanner to the police department.

Use of the scanner will now be the department's first step once they find a lost animal.
