Phoenixville Public Library Participating in Longwood Garden's Community Read Program
Phoenixville Public Library is participating in Longwood Gardens’ Community Read project. The Library invites the public to read Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac and explore the book’s ideas about environmental conservation, land stewardship, and community engagement. First published in 1949, the book serves as one of the cornerstones for modern conservation science, policy, and ethics. It has become a classic in the field, equaled in its lasting stature only by Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. Copies of A Sand County Almanac are available in the Chester County Library System and may be reserved at www.ccls.org.
On Monday, April 7 at 6:30 PM, David Sleasman, Longwood Gardens’ Library & Information Services Coordinator, will host a discussion of Leopold’s book in Phoenixville Public Library’s Community Education Room. At 7:30 PM, following the book discussion, Mr. Sleasman will host a screening of the documentary film, Green Fire (2011, not rated, 74 min.), about the life and legacy of legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold. Green Fire shares highlights from his extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation and the modern environmental movement. It also illustrates how Leopold's vision of a community that cares about both people and land continues to inform and inspire people across the country and around the world, highlighting modern projects that put Leopold’s land ethic in action in a multitude of ways.
These events are free and open to the public. Separate reservations are required for the book discussion and the film screening on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. Phoenixville Public Library is located at 183 Second Avenue, Phoenixville, PA.
