UPDATE: Crash In Schuylkill Canal Leaves Two In Their Late 20s Dead

Two people have died and two have been injured after a car flipped into the canal in Mont Clare near Lock 60 late Monday night, 6 ABC reports.

It is not clear what caused the incident.

Sirens sounded throughout Mont Clare and the north end of Phoenixville late Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday morning as a water rescue progressed in the canal.

Eyewitnesses from across the river reported hearing a man that sounded scared yelling for help from the water.

Rescue crews were initially called to the Towpath near the railroad overpass at 11:39 p.m.

“Two were able to get out, the driver and another individual, and two were not,” First Assistant District Attorney Kevin R. Steele told the Pottstown Mercury.

The victims were a 25-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man. Their identities have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Law enforcement with flashing lights were still gathered in the parking lot of Lock 60 well after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The driver was one of the survivors that was taken to hospital. The condition of the survivors is not known at this time.
