George Washington is rightfully known as “the indispensable man.” Yet, few people really know his “worthy partner” – the woman behind the man. Lady Washington followed her husband to every winter encampment during the Revolutionary War, including Valley Forge. Then she followed her husband into the most powerful residence in the new nation, the President’s House in Philadelphia. As the “first” of the Founding Mothers, Martha Washington’s influence still resounds with us today.

Carol Spacht performs extensively in the Philadelphia region, presenting interactive programs for schools, libraries and civic organizations. Her portrayal of Martha Washington has taken her from Valley Forge National Park to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Carol also appears weekly as our nation’s premier flagmaker at the Betsy Ross House, and has an extensive knowledge of hand-sewing techniques, textiles, and the trade of the upholsterer in the eighteenth century.

Carol studied theatre at Villanova University and graduated with highest honors from Eastern University with degrees in Literature and Theatre Arts. She also portrays Hannah Penn; Juliette Gordon Low, Founder of the Girl Scouts; and delights the smallest of children at Please Touch Museum as Mother Goose. In her “other” life, Carol and her husband, Dave, operate Spacht Sawmill in Worcester Township, a custom sawmill that produces Pennsylvania hardwoods for woodworking enthusiasts.
