Five Phantoms Qualify for District Tournament, Cenci Wins Sectional Crown

UPPER POTTSGROVE- The Phoenixville wrestling regular season may not have lived up to expectations, but seniors Matt Cermanski and Ken Cenci led the young Phantoms into the District One Section II tournament with intensity and swagger they have exhibited in their years at Phoenixville.

Ken Cenci, who won his 100^th match in his opening-round bout with Upper Perkiomen heavyweight Tyler Stephenson, defeated Quakertown’s Jake Swearingen and Pottsgrove’s Chris Nester to claim the sectional championship.

Matt Cermanski (17-13) won his first match with Ryan Eisenhardt 3-1, but dropped the semi-final to the Bucks' Seth Ehlo 5-4, before battling back to claim a fourth-place finish overall at 145 pounds.

Also snagging a fourth place medal was Ed McCarthy, who dominated Pottsgrove’s Matt Cimino 10-1 and also pinned Souderton’s Bobby Jenne to reach the consolation final.

Brendan Bonner very well might have won his 130-pound weight class had it not been for Central Bucks East’s Gio Mannino.

Bonner dropped his opening bout to Mannino 12-5 then battled back through the consolation bracket, beating Dan Jordan from Upper Perk and Andrew Haughy from Pennridge, before seeing Mannino again in the consolation final, which Bonner lost 6-0, finishing fourth.

Jordan Valenteen wreaked havoc through the 140-pound weight class as he disposed of Ryan Monsalud from Central Bucks South in 23 seconds, then pinned North Penn’s Evan Conti in 4:30, setting up a championship match with Quakertown senior Briar Malischewski.

Valenteen score the first two points of the match, but got pinned by Malischewski with 1:07 remaining in the second period.

In all, five Phantoms grapplers qualified for next week’s District One playoff held at Council Rock High School on Friday and Saturday.
