The intrepid explorer is credited with discovering the "New World" on Oct. 12, 1492. But Americans will celebrate Columbus on Oct. 10 this year because, well, that is when the second Monday of the month falls.
Declared a federal holiday since 1937, Columbus Day celebrates Columbus' achievements and celebrates Italian-American heritage.Â

For instance, Pine-Richland schools will be closed. But the Pine-Richland School Board will hold its monthly planning meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the , 702 Warrendale Road, Gibsonia.
Offices for Pine and Richland townships will be open as usual. So will .Â
Allegheny County offices will be closed, along with courts.
Federal offices - understandably - will be closed because it is, after all, a federal holiday.
