Abandoned Alligators Find Temporary Home In Pittsburgh

The gators are staying at a shelter after their owner walked out on them.

PITTSBURGH, PA - You wouldn’t think a person would be cruel enough to force a pair of defenseless animals to fend for themselves, but that’s what happened when someone abandoned a pair of alligators in a house.

City animal control personnel removed the gators from a residence in Hays that were left behind when an unidentified tenant was evicted. Presumably because it would be difficult to attract new tenants to a home populated with gators, the property owner called the police to ask that they be removed.

The animals have found temporary lodging at Humane Animal Rescue, where CEO Dan Rossi said the owner will have an opportunity to reclaim them.

But the abandoned alligators won’t be permanent residents at the shelter, Rossi told KDKA-TV.

“It is legal to own them in the state of Pennsylvania, so we may adopt them out,” he said. “We may transport them to another state and release them,” he said.
