Allegheny County Coronavirus Cases Skyrocket

Here are the latest coronavirus case numbers for Allegheny County and southwestern Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department reported no new coronavirus deaths on Thursday. The county death toll remains at 187.

However, the county reported 233 new cases, the largest single-day number since the outbreak began. That number also is more than double the previous high mark of 110 set on Wednesday. The number of cases during the outbreak now stands at 3,103, up from 2,870 on Wednesday.

"While an increase in the number of cases was expected, this is larger than expected," health department officials said in a statement. "The expectation is that the numbers will also significantly increase again tomorrow."

In the newest cases, ages range from 6 months to 99 years, with the median age being 29.

Four hundred and one people have been hospitalized in the county during the outbreak. There were four new hospitalizations on Wednesday, county officials said.

With 678 confirmed cases in Beaver County, 675 in Westmoreland County, 311 in Butler County and 230 in Washington County, that brings the total number of cases in the five-county
southwestern Pennsylvania region to 4,997. That's up from 4,611 on Wednesday.

According to the state Department of Health, 322 people have died thus far in the five-county region: One hundred and eighty-seven in Allegheny County, 78 in Beaver County, 38 in Westmoreland County, 13 in Butler County and six in Washington County. No new deaths were reported on Wednesday.
