PITTSBURGH, PA — The man accused of stabbing a UPMC Children's Hospital doctor to death and critically wounding his wife early Thursday now has been charged with rape in connection with a separate incident.
Allegheny County Police announced Saturday that Elijah Hemingway, 32, of West Mifflin, was charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and robbery.
Those charges arrived two days after Hemingway was charged with multiple offenses including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.
Hemingway is accused of breaking into the home of UPMC Children's Hospital physician Dr. Idris Evans, 46, and his family on Linden Avenue in Edgewood early Thursday. He allegedly stabbed Evans to death and critically wounded his wife in an attack that began while the couple was sleeping.
According to police, the wife's condition has been upgraded to stable.
During the homicide investigation, county police detectives were contacted by Wilkinsburg Police regarding a sexual assault that occurred on Wednesday at approximately 10:30 a.m.
The female victim told police she was walking on a path that connects an alley to West Street when she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man. Detectives began an investigation and were able to recover multiple items connecting Hemingway to the reported rape, along with the victim's cell phone that was reported stolen during the incident.
At the time of both the stabbing and the sexual assault, Hemingway was free on cashless bond despite being arraigned in July on two felony charges.
