UPMC Children's Hospital Physician Stabbed To Death

EDGEWOOD, PA — A man is in custody after allegedly killing a UPMC Children's Hospital physician in an early morning stabbing Thursday that also left his wife critically wounded.

Dr. Idris Evans, the co-medical director of UMPC Children's pediatric transport team and a University of Pittsburgh professor, was killed in the incident.

Allegheny County Police identified the suspect as Elijah Hemingway, 32. Investigators say that Hemingway entered the couple's home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping.

Hemingway is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.

Police were notified of the stabbing in the 100 block of Linden Avenue at 12:31. When they arrived, they found Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds. Evans was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. His wife also was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

County detectives were beginning an investigation when they were notified that a K9 unit from the Monroeville Police Department had conducted a search and found Hemingway behind a nearby home suffering from lacerations to his hand. He was detained and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

"The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

"Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected."
