Racist Flyers Surface In Community Where UPMC Doctor Was Slain

Police have found racist flyers circulating in the neighborhood where Dr. Idris Evans was killed last week.

EDGEWOOD, PA — Police say racist flyers are circulating in the community.

The Edgewood Police Department confirmed the flyers have been distributed in the borough in a social media post Tuesday. The department did not detail their contents.

"Edgewood is a wonderful, close-knit community, and there is no place here for racism, hatred, or messages intended to divide or intimidate our neighbors," the post stated.

"Sadly, there are those who attempt to use tragedy and difficult moments to spread hate or further their own agendas. Those actions do not represent the values of our community."

The post appeared to subtly refer to last week's brutal stabbing death of Dr. Idris Evans, a well-known UPMC Children's Hospital physician, and the critical wounding of his wife.

Allegheny County Police arrested as Elijah Hemingway, 32, in connection with the slaying. Investigators say that Hemingway entered the couple's home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping.

Hemingway is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.

Evans was Caucasian. Hemingway is Black.

The Edgewood Police Department reaffirmed in the post that it remains committed to "helping ensure that every person in our community feels safe, respected and supported.

"Pleas continue to look out for one another, and as always, do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have concerns.".

A community assembly Sunday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. "It will be a place for us to talk, listen, grieve and heal as a community," the department stated in a previous post.

When the assembly ends, a candlelight vigil for Dr. Evans will be held in Memorial Park.
