Pittsburgh-Area Volunteer Firefighter Charged In Fatal Crash (patch.com) β Allegheny County police have charged a 29-year-old Monroeville volunteer firefighter in connection with a 2025 crash that fatally injured an 88-year-old driver at Haymaker and McGinley roads. Investigators say he was speeding at 71 mph while responding to a call in his personal vehicle without lights or sirens, and he now faces counts including homicide by vehicle and reckless driving, a case closely watched in the Pittsburgh area.

2. PA Gas Prices Continue To Soar: AAA (patch.com) β Pennsylvania drivers are paying sharply higher fuel prices than a year ago, with regular gas averaging $4.47 a gallon and diesel up about 64 percent. Northwestern and southwestern counties are seeing the steepest costs, and Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, now averages $4.70 per gallon, squeezing commuters across the region.

Closed Pittsburgh Restaurant Returning After Rebranding Effort (patch.com) β Food lovers in the Pittsburgh area will see Shorty's at The Waterfront in Homestead reopen as Shorty's Social Kitchen after a full renovation and rebranding. Owner Herky Pollock says the refreshed spot features revamped interiors, an improved karaoke room, and new bar and food programs, while the North Shore Shorty's and other Legacy Hospitality restaurants across Pittsburgh keep their current concepts.

4. Pittsburgh-Based Duolingo, Taco Bell Team Up On New Sauce (patch.com) β Pittsburghers have a hometown connection to Global Taco Day this year, as Pittsburgh-based Duolingo teams up with Taco Bell on a new Duo Habanero Sauce. The limited-time packets feature taco-themed sayings in nine languages and debut Oct. 6, with U.S. customers able to get a free packet with a Doritos Locos Taco purchase.

Pennsylvania eatery named one of the best new restaurants of 2026 by Yelp (cbsnews.com) β A new East Liberty spot, Palm Palm on Centre Avenue, has been named one of Yelp's 25 best new restaurants in America, putting Pittsburgh's dining scene in the national spotlight. With a Palm Springs-inspired midcentury vibe, creative small and large plates, and popular brunch and happy hour options, it's quickly becoming a go-to neighborhood destination.
