Although Pittsburgh is mostly known for steel and bridges, our great city is also brimming with arts and culture. Here are some must-see destinations in and around Pittsburgh.
Carnegie Museum of Art
The Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) is home to a collection of over 30,000 items, including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, architectural casts, renderings, models, and so much more. The museum’s mission is to not only connect people with art but also with ideas and with each other. Many of their exhibits, publications, and programming addresses the tough social issues of our time. If you haven’t visited CMOA recently, put this one on your list.

The Frick Pittsburgh
The Frick Pittsburgh is made up of several museums and historical buildings. The Historic Clayton Mansion was the home of Henry Clay Frick and his family from 1882 to 1905. The mansion has been restored and is available for tours. The Frick Art Museum was built to be home to Helen Clay Frick’s collection of fine art. You can also see some of the first “horseless carriages” at the Car and Carriage Museum and enjoy a stroll through the scenic gardens and greenhouse.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art
While not technically located in Pittsburgh, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is a can’t-miss destination for art and history lovers alike. The 3,400 objects of fine and decorative American art include works from four centuries. The collection is incredibly diverse and is sure to inspire and move you while deepening your appreciation for American art.
Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art
If you’re looking for something completely different, check out the Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art. The Mattress Factory was founded in 1977 and houses site-specific installations from artists around the world. “Site-specific” is an art term that refers to art that is created for a particular space and will lose part of its value if it is relocated. Every exhibit in the museum has been created in the same place that you view it. The Mattress Factory provides a unique experience you won’t want to miss.
