Bon-Ton Files For Bankruptcy, Closing Some Pennsylvania Stores
The company becomes the latest bricks and mortar retailer to pursue bankruptcy protection.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Bon-Ton Stores Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will close 47 of its 260 stores, including several in Pennsylvania.
Based in York, the company includes nine furniture galleries and five clearance centers in 24 states under the Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Bergner’s, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers nameplates. The stores offer an assortment of national and private brand fashion apparel and accessories for women, men and children, as well as cosmetics and home furnishings.
“We are currently engaged in constructive discussions with potential investors and our debtholders on a financial restructuring plan, and the actions we are taking are intended to give us additional time and financial flexibility to evaluate options for our business,” a company statement said.

“We are committed to pursuing the path that we believe is in the best interests of our company and our stakeholders, and we will continue to provide our customers with quality merchandise and an exceptional shopping service as we move through this financial restructuring process.”
Among the Bon-Tons to be shuttered in Pennsylvania are locations in Erie, Johnstown, Carlisle and State College. There are no immediate plans to close the company’s stores in southwestern Pennsylvania, which are located in Washington, Greensburg and Indiana.

Bon Ton’s action continues continues a troubling trend for retailers. About 50 filed for bankruptcy protection in the past year, including Toys R Us, RadioShack and Payless.
