Consumer Alert Issued For Popular Pittsburgh Mall Restaurant

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Saga Hibachi Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, at Monroeville Mall, for numerous food code violations.

During a Sept. 17 inspection, 10 live roaches and an egg case were seen under bar mesh that is lining the shelf for the printer behind the sushi bar.

Five live roaches were seen on and behind the kitchen hand sink that is next to the ice machine.

Multiple dead roaches were seen on shelf behind sushi carts in kitchen and on glue boards under the hibachi grills.

Sticky fly strips hung above food preparation/food handling and warewashing areas contained multiple dead flies.

"All areas of the facility are in dire need of deep cleaning," the inspection report stated.

For the consumer alert to be removed, that deep cleaning needs to occur. A certified pest operator must treat the restaurant for its roach infestation, and all service reports must be retained for reviewing.

Onsite pest control treatment must be increased to a minimum of twice per month.

Bluelights and drain treatments should be added to address fly issues.

Monitoring devices such as glue boards and tin cats must be placed in all cabinets behind sushi station and bar, throughout the kitchen and below or under all hibachi stations.

A re-inspection of the restaurant will occur on Sept. 28.
