Daylight Saving Time 2023 Ending; Set Your Clocks Back, Pittsburgh

Time to "fall back" and reset any analog clocks you have. Standard time is about to return.

PITTSBURGH, PA - On the bright side, your early mornings are about to become, well, brighter. But with Daylight Saving Time coming to an end this weekend, it’s going to be dark before most people have dinner.

At 2 a.m. on Sunday, clocks need to “fall back” an hour to 1 a.m. Most computers, phones and DVRs automatically reset, but you’ll have to manually change any analog clocks.

What does the time change mean for Pittsburgh besides an extra hour of sleep for people? On Saturday, sunrise occurs at 7:51 a.m. and sunset happens at 6:15 p.m. On Sunday, the sun will rise at 6:55 a.m. and set at 5:11 p.m.

The days will continue to get shorter until the winter solstice occurs on Dec. 21, when we’ll have just nine hours and 20 minutes of daylight. The sun will rise that day at 7:37 a.m. and set at 4:58 p.m.

Daylight Saving Time, or “daylight savings time” as it’s commonly known, returns on March 10. But the American Academy of Sleep Medicine wishes it would not.

The organization has advocated eliminating seasonal time changes in favor of permanent standard time, which aligns best with human circadian biology.

"The annual change from standard time to daylight saving time is associated with increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. There are increased hospital admissions due to atrial fibrillation," the academy states on its website.

"There also is an increase in emergency room visits and missed medical appointments. Traffic accidents increase in the first few days after the change from standard time to daylight saving time. The spring and fall time changes also have been associated with mood disturbances and suicide."
