Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:

1) A local man is dead after being shot by state police in Allegheny County Monday morning. State police said troopers responded to an incident along Shamrock Lane in Fawn Township. Police said the man presented a firearm and failed to obey commands from authorities. The man succumbed to his injuries. State police are actively investigating. Residents are being asked to avoid the area. Police said this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to public safety.

2) When it comes to the 2022 election, here is what Pittsburgh residents will help decide. Voting pertains to a number of key races, including a Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race that could determine which party controls the Senate; a Pennsylvania gubernatorial race to choose outgoing Gov. Tom Wolf's successor; and a key Congressional race to determine who represents Pittsburgh in the U.S. House. For Pennsylvania U.S. Senate: Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman faces celebrity physician Dr. Mehmet Oz Fetterman has a substantial fundraising edge over Oz, but Oz has significantly tightened the race in the polls in recent weeks. For Pennsylvania Governor: Democratic state Attorney General Josh Shapiro squares off against Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano. Shapiro perhaps is best-known for spearheading an investigation that in 2020 identified more than 300 predator priests in Pennsylvania - including 99 in Pittsburgh. Mastriano is far-right in his political positions and participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. And for the U.S. House: the key race is in the 12th District - which includes Pittsburgh - as two candidates hope to replace the retiring Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle. State Rep. Summer Lee, a progressive Democrat is running against Republican Mike Doyle, the council president in the Pittsburgh suburb of Plum. Polls are open on election day from 7 a.m.-8p.m. Click here to check the status of your mail-in or absentee ballot request.

3) The DiCarlos of O'Hara Township say their family dog was stolen from the parking lot of a car dealership Thursday. This belief stems from surveillance footage that enhances the theory. The footage shows Turbo, the 4-year-old Yorkipoo, following Regan DiCarlo in the parking lot. When Regan moves to the upper right-hand corner of the frame, Turbo can be seen diverting her attention elsewhere. A car can be seen on Route 51, preparing to turn left into the RAD Auto Shop's parking lot. The passenger door swings open and Turbo runs over to the car, which is parked barely in the lot. The passenger can be seen scooping up Turbo, looking around briefly, and getting back in the car before it leaves. "I would buy them a dog," Mary DiCarlo said. "You can't take ours." The DiCarlos said Turbo often roams around off-leash with Regan at work. They called her the business' "mascot." "She loves being here," Mary said.

4) Theft charges have been filed against a 90-year-old woman for allegedly taking money and a voucher out of a man's wallet Sunday at Rivers Casino. According to the complaint, Norma Buchwach of Pittsburgh allegedly picked up a wallet that was accidentally left on the seat of a slot machine and took $1,000 cash and a voucher worth $305. She then allegedly left the wallet in a bus lobby bathroom before leaving the casino. Another patron turned the wallet in to security. State police filed the summons.

5) During this year's "Fill the Hill" event at Soldier & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, attendees and locals have the chance to purchase and sponsor flags placed on the front lawn to honor veterans in their lives. While Soldiers & Sailors started selling flags in October, the nearly 100 flags will continue waving throughout November in honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11. People can purchase a flag for $20 on the Soldiers & Sailors website through the end of the month. The event offers a "Gold Donor" option for $100, which includes six flags for the price of five. Lisa Pettita, collections manager for Soldiers & Sailors, came up with the idea to "fill the hill" after finding "tons of small flags" in the basement of the museum. "I knew there was something we could do with them," Pettita said. "I went to my boss to tell him about the idea and he loved it." Pettita said employees commonly say "every day is Veterans Day" at Soldiers & Sailors. The funds raised from Fill the Hill helps the memorial to fulfill the mission of honoring those who serve. In 2021, more than 600,000 veterans lived in Pennsylvania — making it the fourth-highest state in the country in terms of veteran population. Neff said this highlights the reason why Soldiers & Sailors is "so significant to the community."

Patch deal of the day:

Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don't need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
