Downtown Pittsburgh Bike Lane System To Expand

Find out here where the new lanes will be added.

PITTSBURGH, PA - If you’re a cyclist, this should come as good news. If you’re a motorist, perhaps not. Pittsburgh is expanding its Downtown bike lane system, city officials announced Tuesday, with construction slated to begin this week.

The city intends to connect the great Allegheny Passage trail at Smithfield Street through Downtown to Stanwix Street in a project expected to be completed by mid-October.. A contraflow bike lane and shared lane markings will be installed on Third Avenue from Smithfield to Stanwix streets, shared bus-bike lane markings will be installed on bus lanes on Wood and Smithfield streets, and Fort Pitt Boulevard is getting a bus-bike only lane from Smithfield to Wood Street.

That’s not all. In 2019, a dedicated bike facility will be installed on Stanwix Street, Penn Avenue Extension and Liberty Avenue to connect the system additions being added this year and the existing Penn Avenue bike lanes to Point State Park.
