Downtown Pittsburgh Bridge Closing For More Than A Year

Traffic patterns on the span will be different when it reopens.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Rachel Carson (Ninth Street) Bridge linking Downtown Pittsburgh and the North Shore will close next month for a $23.3 renovation. The span is not expected to reopen until the fall of 2020.

When the rehabilitation is complete, the bridge no longer will have four lanes of traffic with two lanes in each direction. Instead, there will be three lanes with wider shoulders. The lane carrying trafic from the North Shore to Downtown will widen into two lanes, while the lane carrying traffic from Downtown to the North Shore also will widen into two lanes on the other side.

Traffic will be detoured using the Andy Warhol (Seventh Street) Bridge and Isabella Street.

Major items of work include a new concrete deck, structural steel repairs, repainting the span Aztec gold, replacing the bridge new sidewalk installation.
