Downtown Pittsburgh Getting Large New Parking Garage
The new structure will be built on the site of an aging garage slated for demolition.
PITTSBURGH, PA - Downtown Pittsburgh is getting a new parking garage that will have more than 600 spaces, but that won’t mean it will be easier to find a space Downtown. The new structure will rise on the site of an aging 580-space garage about to be razed.
Pittsburgh Parking Authority official on Tuesday will seek approval from the city planning commission to demolish the 61-year-old garage at Ninth Street and Penn Avenue in the heart of the Cultural District. The $2 million project is expected to begin in May and take about four months to complete.
The new garage is expected to include an open park-like space. The garage will have entrances and exits on Ninth Street, as does the current one, but entry and exits from Penn Avenue are expected to be eliminated.

Construction of the replacement garage could begin in the fall, with the opening targeted for November 2020.
