PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh-based Mad Mex restaurant chain began three decades ago on Atwood Street in Oakland on the cusp of the University of Pittsburgh campus. The chain gradually expanded, but the original Mad Mex has become a casualty of staffing issues that have plagued the restaurant industry for the past several years.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the difficult decision to close Mex Oakland due to ongoing staffing and operational challenges," a post on the eatery's Facebook page stated. "We'll
never forget the good times we’ve shared on Atwood over the past 30 years. We hope to continue to make great memories with you at our other Mad Mex locations throughout the city."

Other Mad Mex locations in Pittsburgh are located in Shadyside, Fox Chapel, Scott, Ross, Robinson, Cranberry and Monroeville.
