Fleeing Suspect's Vehicle Hits Suburban Pittsburgh Police Officer

A suburban Pittsburgh police officer fired a shot at a fleeing vehicle after it made contact with him early Tuesday.

BEN AVON, PA — A suspect fleeing from an attempted traffic stop struck an Avalon police officer with his vehicle early Tuesday, prompting the officer to fire a shot as the vehicle sped away.

The officer wasn't injured, according to Allegheny County police.

At around 1:30 a.m., Avalon police attempted the traffic stop along Ohio River Boulevard after observing a vehicle traveling north with tinted windows and a tinted license plates. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver pulled out onto the roadway and made contact with the officer, who fired a single shot as the vehicle fled the scene.

Investigators located the vehicle shortly after 6 a.m. in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood. It had been struck by a bullet in the driver's side window. Police also were able to locate the driver, a 25-year-old man, who was not injured.

No charges have been filed. Police said the investigation will be turned over to the county district attorney's office for review when it is completed.
