Food Bank Could Run Out Of Supplies, Director Warns

The resources of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank are being severely tested during the coronavirus outbreak.

DUQUESNE, PA - A five-fold increase in people being served due to the coronavirus outbreak has Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank president Lisa Scales concerned the facility could run out of supplies.

"We are afraid that eventually we may run out of food," Scales said Tuesday in an interview with CNN."Right now, our food supply is strong, but we have seen a significant increase in demand in just the past two weeks."

The food bank served 5,109 vehicles in its first four drive-up distributions and more than 265,000 pounds of food were distributed. The food bank typically uses a conversion rate of 1.2 pounds of food being equal to a meal, so that amounts to about 220,000 drive-up distribution meals.
