Former Penn State Football Player & Super Bowl Champ Dies

STATE COLLEGE, PA — Penn State fans are mourning the loss of former Nittany Lions running back and Super Bowl champion Matt Suhey, who died over the weekend. He was 68.

Penn State announced Suhey's death on X.

The Bellefonte PA native played four seasons in Happy Valley before being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2nd round of the 1980 NFL Draft.

He spent 10 years with the Bears, playing alongside Hall-of-Fame running back Walter Payton and being a key component of the Bears' 1985 championship season.

In the Bears' 46-10 dismantling of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX, Suhey scored the first Bears touchdown and finished with 52 yards on 11 carries. He also had a 24-yard reception.
