Former Pittsburgh Mayor Gainey Lands Lucrative New Job

PITTSBURGH, PA — Former Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey wasted little time in finding a new job after leaving office last month - and the gig pays well.

Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton has appointed Gainey to a two-year term on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Gainey will be paid $145,000 annually.

The panel is the state licensing and the regulatory agency responsible for overseeing slot machines and casino gambling in the state. The agency can fine and revoke licenses for operators who violate state regulations, and can be individual gamblers from casinos.

The board typically meets twice a month.

Gainey, of the city's Lincoln-Lemington section, is a former state representative who became Pittsburgh's first black mayor in 2021. He was defeated last year in the Democratic mayoral primary by Allegheny County Controller Corey O'Connor, who won the general election in November.
