Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme among the places offering the freebies. Also, what are the top five independent doughnut places in town?

PITTSBURGH, PA - Friday is one of the most anticipated days of the year: National Doughnut Day. It’s a day not to count calories, but to pay tribute to those delectable small fried cakes of sweetened dough by devouring them.
Some of the doughnut industry’s heaviest hitters are offering free or discounted doughnuts to mark the occasion. Krispy Kreme is providing customers with any doughnut of their their choice for free. Dunkin Donuts will give you a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage. Giant Eagle will give you a free half-dozen with the purchase of a half-dozen, but the supermarket chain does that every Friday.
Patch is helping to move the National Doughnut Day dialogue forward by listing the top five independent doughnut shops in Pittsburgh according to Yelp users. You might want to call to see if they, too, are offering freebies on this most joyous of doughnut days.

1.Better-Maid Donuts, Crafton Heights
Tips from one reviewer: “Opens at 6 a.m. on weekdays, but that is a loose time. No apologies because the doughnuts need to be ready. Locals say (the shop is) sold out by 8 a.m.-9 a.m. easily. Weekend lines are crazy, I’m told.”
2.Just Good Donuts, South Side
“I bought one of each type (12 total) to share with my office colleagues,” one reviewer wrote. “Everyone was pleased and raved about the taste. Certainly among the best donuts we've had and easily 1 1/2 times the size of a typical large doughnut.”
