PITTSBURGH, PA — Giant Eagle is cutting prices on more than 1,000 items beginning Thursday in what it terms a "Deals for Days" special. The promotion will run through the end of July and should save customers $7.5 million, according to the Pittsburgh-based grocery store chain.

The discounts will focus on summer-related products such as hamburgers, hot dogs and coleslaw.

“At Giant Eagle, we are committed to listening and responding to our customers, and right now, they are telling us that they need more ways to save on the products that matter most to them,” Brian Ferrier, Giant Eagle senior vice president of merchandising, said in a statement.

“We’re confident that we have created meaningful savings across the store, helping ease budgets and encourage those summer celebrations we all enjoy.”

In slashing prices, Giant Eagle is following the lead of grocery competitors such as Walmart and Target. Walmart recently said saying it would reduce prices on nearly 7,000 items and Target will cut prices on more than 1,500, according to CNN.
