Groundhog Day 2024: Time For Punxsutawney Phil To Retire?
An animal rights activist organization is offering to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a giant coin.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is again calling for the retirement of Pennsylvania's most famous rodent: Punxsutawney Phil.
Thousands flock to Punxsutawney on Feb. 2 each year to see the groundhog make a predication on whether spring will arrive early or six more weeks of winter beckons. The forecast is based on whether Phil sees his shadow, which makes no sense at all from a meteorolgical standpoint.
PETA has sent a letter to Tom Dunkel, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's president, offering to send a giant gold coin to replace Phil since his weather predictions are no more reliable than a coin toss.

PETA wants Phil transferred to a animal sanctuary rather than spend his days in the small enclosure that the animal is kept in year-round at a local library.
Dunkel could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday, but it's unlikely the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club will accept PETA's offer.

"Groundhog Day is also a legend that traverses centuries, its origins clouded in the mists of time with ethnic cultures and animals awakening on specific dates," the club's website states.
"Myths such as this tie our present to the distant past when nature did, indeed, influence our lives. It is the day that the groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow.
"If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground."
