Health Department Cites Pittsburgh Nursing & Senior Rehab Facility

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for the Caring Heights Community Care & Rehabilitation Center, on Coraopolis Road in Kennedy Township, for multiple health code violations.

Caring Heights is a 119-bed skilled nursing and senior rehabilitation center.

During an inspection on Monday, mouse droppings were observed in a corner of a dry storage room.

Elevated temperatures were found in several items in a walk in on-cooler. Foods must be stored at 41 degrees or below, but the following items had these temperatures:

• Cooked noodles, 47 degrees.

• Pickles in brine, 48 degrees.

• Single serving carton of milk, 47 degrees.
• Apple juice, 46 degrees.

A temperature log for the walk in cooler is posted on the outside of the door. For the week of July 20th-July 27th, morning refrigeration temperatures were listed at 42 degrees or higher.

"There is a lack of active managerial control at the facility.," the inspection report stated.

"Throughout the process of the walk in cooler
malfunctioning, there was inadequate action taken by the healthcare facility and administration to
repair the walk-in cooler."

A facility with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days.

Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
