Health Department Shuts Down Popular Pittsburgh Coffee Shop

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has ordered the closure of a popular Oakland coffee shop.

La Prima Espresso at 3400 Fifth Avenue in the city's campus section, has been shut down.

A recent inspection found an active sewage backup present in basement of facility. Wastewater, debris, and fecal matter were seen emerging from a floor drain.

The drain appears to back up when basement toilet is flushed and also when water is run through sinks in the kitchen area.

A shelving unit storing single-use articles is positioned directly above floor drain .

Additionally, a decomposing rodent was found on a glue trap near a basement exterior door.

"For the facility to reopen, there must be a registered master plumber onsite to resolve and repair the facility’s sewage system," an inspector stated in the health department report.

"Any and all blockages must be removed and any repairs recommended by the plumber must be completed. The entire basement area must be disinfected per a guidance document provided to manager.

The shop was instructed to retain service report from plumber for review.

All plumbing work must be be completed by a registered master plumber."
