The university always planned to sell the playhouse to help finance construction of its successor building Downtown. Point Park told the Post-Gazette that the property has more value as a clean site.

The playhouse opened in the 1930s and the likes of Gene Kelly and Shirley Jones performed there. Point Park has owned the complex since the 1960s.
