Historic Former Pittsburgh School Plagued By Multiple Suspicious Fires

Recent fires have been reported at an old Pittsburgh school building that is in the National Register of Historic Places.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The city's fire investigation unit is probing two recent suspicious fires at the former Beltzhoover Elementary School, a historic structure that currently is being renovated into senior ousing.

On Tuesday night, firefighters were dispatched to the building at 320 Cedarhurst and found flames in a rear room facing Sylvania Street. The fire was extinguished but not before causing significant damage to the room.

On June 1, at around 6:20 a.m., heavy smoke conditions were discovered by construction workers as they arrived at the building. Firefights put out a fire in a first floor room.

No one was injured in either fire.

The fire investigation unit is asking that anyone with information, or possible home security video, contact the unit at 412-782-7646.

The school closed in 2004 and the Pittsburgh Public Schools sold the building in 2017. The structure is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
