Historic Kaufmann's Clock In Pittsburgh Being Refurbished

PITTSBURGH, PA — It was time for a little cleanup of the more than century-old Kaufmann's clock. The Pittsburgh landmark, a staple at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street, Downtown, is being touched up.

James Hill, an aide to Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, posted pictures on Twitter of the clock being taken down for regilding. Once the new gold overlay is completed, the clock should look as good as when it first was installed in 1913.

The clock, given its historic designation by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, outlived the department store that provides its name. Macy's acquired the Kaufmann's chain in 2006 and closed the Downtown location in 2015.

Now called Kaufmann's Grand, the block-long building is a mixed-use development with residential and retail space. A Target store soon will occupy the prominent locale underneath the clock.
